From 1 July 2019, updates to the geographical classifications used in health workforce programs are available on the DoctorConnect website (www.doctorconnect.gov.au/internet/otd/publishing.nsf/Content/home).

Updates include:

  • The introduction of a new Distribution Priority Area (DPA) classification system to replace Districts of Workforce Shortage (DWS) areas for GPs and bonded doctors
  • DWS for Specialists will be updated using the current methodology and latest available population and Medicare billing data
  • Modified Monash Model – will be updated using the latest available Census data and health programs will begin transitioning to the new MMM (2019) from 1 January 2020
  • From 1 January 2020, the classification system used to determine eligibility for rural Bulk Billing Incentives will change.

The changes to these classification systems has been introduced to address the maldistribution of medical services across Australia and better target financial incentives to attract and retain medical staff in rural and remote areas.
