Your Family Doctor: Here for you


With one in two Australians reported as having at least one chronic condition, it has never been more important to seek your family doctor’s help to coordinate your care, AMA President, Dr Tony Bartone said today.

“Family Doctor Week is a time to highlight how your GP is here for you and your family, and management of chronic disease is an important part of your ongoing health care,” Dr Bartone, a GP in Melbourne, said.

AMA President, Dr Tony Bartone, said today that family doctors play a central coordinating role in identifying and treating mental health concerns, and referring patients on to other specialists in the mental health care team when necessary.

AMA President, Dr Michael Gannon, said today that the Productivity Commission Report on Government Services 2018 provides further confirmation that general practice is the most efficient and cost effective part of the Australian health system.

Dr Gannon said the quality and productivity of Australia’s GPs is up with the best in the world.

“The Productivity Commission Report is compelling evidence that the Government must provide greater investment and support for general practice,” Dr Gannon said.
